Senior Handicap Pennant 2026

Monday 16^th March saw the conclusion of the Melbourne East Seniors Pennant competition for 2026 hosted by Gardiners Run Golf Club.

By way of background the competition was initiated to give medium handicap seniors (eligible to players over 50) the opportunity to represent their club in match play conditions.

Six local clubs are represented in the competition, with each club given the opportunity of fielding two teams. Heidelberg is represented by the Heidelberg Blue team and the Heidelberg Black team. The twelve teams are split into two sections with each team playing against all other teams in their section over a five week period. The teams finishing on top of each section after the Home & Away games progress to the Pennant final.

Heidelberg Blue had a competitive season in their section, but impressively the Heidelberg Black team went through the Home & Away games strongly to top their section and qualify for the Pennant final against Yarrambat Black. In a hard fought contest the Heidelberg Black team came away with a 5.5 to 3.5 win, and thereby secured back-to-back Grand Final victories.

Congratulations to winning team members Andrew Redman (captain), Robert Poyntz, Garry Stafford , Robert Field, Len Belcher, Paul Giannelis, Mark Smith, and John Reggars. Steve Leropoulos, Ray Stewart and Shaun McGovern also played a significant role in getting the team to the top of their division in the lead up to the final.

This competition has been running for 10 years now and is thoroughly enjoyed by all participants, not only for the honour of representing their club, but also for the opportunity to play other courses and compete and socialise with their members.

Thanks to Neil Walmeyer for the role he plays in coordinating the Heidelberg Golf Clubs participation in this competition, and equally thanks to Lindsay, Frances, Jess and the Pro Shop staff for their support when it is our privilege to host.

Irrigation infomation session

We will be holding an information session for members on Tuesday 14th April at 5:30pm.

All members are welcome to attend. This session will provide an opportunity to share important updates and information, as well as to answer any questions members may have.

HUGE day for our Pennant group on Sunday. Both our club Pennant teams are performing extremely well this season.

The Youth boys knocked off the top team to remain in touch with the Top 2. The boys played outstanding golf against an extremely talented Yarra Yarra.

Our Men’s Team comfortably took care of their opposition at home, with some exceptional golf played.

2 rounds to go, both teams looking to secure a Top-2 finish and make the Final. Outstanding support at HGC on Sunday.

Women’s Friday Pennant – Round 4 Wrap-Up

Last Friday, our Women’s Pennant team didn’t need to travel too far, as we headed over to Rosanna to take on Sandhurst – an opponent we knew all too well.

After halving our first encounter with them in Round 5 last year at Kingston Heath, and then narrowly losing to them on the 19th hole in the Final, we anticipated another closely contested match between the two clubs.

At the turn, our team held the advantage. However, Sandhurst mounted a strong comeback on the back nine, with matches swinging back and forth all the way to the finish. In the end, the contest was decided with a 3.5 result.

Heidelberg finishes on a high in Yarra Courses Senior Pennant

Round 9 saw Heidelberg taking on Gardiner’s Run at Kew Golf Club. A strong performance by the team winning 6 games to 3.

Another year of close finishes that saw us finish 5th of 9 teams. A stand out performance from captain Chris Dimattina winning all of his 7 matches and first year players Dave Poulson and James Hampton were strong in the top half of the team.
The final will be held at Heidelberg on Friday 10th April with Rosanna and Heritage fighting for the Pennant. Our team will be trying to defend the YCSP plate.
