Junior state teams announced

Andre Lautee and Alizza Hetherington
2017 Victorian junior team captains Andre Lautee and Alizza Hetherington

The 2017 Victorian junior teams were announced today by Golf Victoria’s high performance department ahead of the Australian Boys’ & Girls’ Amateur Championships and Junior Interstate Series to be held in NSW from 4-13 April.

There has been just one change to the girls’ side which finished runner-up in 2016, with Kono Matsumoto set to make her anticipated state team debut after becoming an Australian citizen last September.

The team will be captained by Alizza Hetherington who is coming off the back of a breakthrough year, taking out the ‘Victorian double’ with wins at both the Girls’ Championship and Women’s Amateur Championship. Her outstanding play has seen her rocket into second place on the national girls’ rankings as she looks towards her second junior interstate series in Victorian colours.

Alexandra Hilliard, Linley Ooi, Gabriela Ruffels and Zara Woodbridge will all return in 2017 to round out the girls’ side who will compete at Port Kembla Golf Club from 9-11 April. The team will be coached by VIS assistant coach Darren Cole and managed by Jo Charlton.

This year the boys’ team will welcome three new team members in Max Charles, Antony Majstorovic and Jasper Stubbs. Andre Lautee will captain the side on the back of a strong year in 2016. Lautee recorded wins at the Murray River Junior Masters and South Australia Junior Masters, as well as winning the 2016 Victorian Junior Averages. He continues to move up the national rankings where he currently sits at number eight.

Toby Walker and Cameron John complete the boys’ side who will play at the Riverside Oaks from 10-13 April. The team will be coached by David Capaldo, professional at Peninsula Kingswood Country Golf Club and managed by Golf Victoria High Performance Manager Ashley Marshall.

Kay Bannan (Southern, 14 year’s old), Pheonix Campbell (Huntingdale, 15) and Nathan Page (The National, 13) have been selected to travel to NSW as development players. They will compete in the Australian Junior Championship and support the players at the Junior Interstate Series.

Congratulations to the 2017 Get Wines Direct Heidelberg Pro Am winner Simon Hawkes.

The event provided an opportunity for the Club to showcase the excellent presentation of our golf course and raise money for our local charity CAVE. Mother Nature turned on the weather for us and we were lucky enough to witness Simon Hawkes play a faultless round of 8 under 64 to shoot a new course record.

A big thank you to all of the following sponsors:

Get Wines Direct, Johns Lyng Group, Schweppes, Bunnings, Bertocchi, Lion, Gourmet Foods, Metropolitan Foods, Bendigo Bank, North Park Private Hospital, Seacol, Timeless Watches, Local Roads, Concept Logistics, Lecky’s, Collingwood Football Club, Barry Plant, SG Printing, Bowlen, Dunstan & Associates, EA Auctions and Carbonetix.

We would also like to thank all of the Heidelberg Golf Club Team on a great effort in showcasing the event. Lastly, a huge thank you to our club Ambassador Tony Shaw. Tony’s dedication to the event over the years is truly remarkable. Without all of your support the event would not be possible.

We hope all who attended the day had a great experience and we are looking forward to being back for the Get Wines Direct 2018 Pro Am bigger and better next year.

Simon Hawkes set a new course record today in the GetWinesDirect Pro-Am at the Heidelberg Golf Club with a faultless round of 8-under 64, beating the previous record held by Kris Mueck (65) who also competed today.

After teeing off on the 10th hole Hawkes birdied five of his first nine holes, to make the turn in 31.  He then eagled the Par 5 4th and immediately backed it up with a birdie on the short Par 4 4th to move to 8-under.

His round could have been even lower as finished with four straight Pars which included missing a short range birdie putt on the 9th, his last hole.

“It’s great, this is my first course record ever” said Hawkes.

His form has been fluctuating of late finishing third in the Qantas Golf Club Pro-Am at the beginning of the week and  after missing the cut at the Oates Vic Open last weekend.

“I’ve been playing really well since the start of the year, I shot 12-under in Asian Qualifying School first stage but I missed out, so it’s kind of been a year of good golf and misses so far so it’s nice to finally get one over the line.”
